BAVIN, n.2 A number or cluster. [′be:vɪn]w.Dmf. 1908 J. L. Waugh Robbie Doo (1912) i.:
A bavin o' boys followed him.
w.Dmf. 1922 Dmf. Rhymes in Rym. Club Misc. III. 100:
We have still the word “bavin” in daily use in Nithsdale, meaning a crowd of children. It is a word peculiar to the locality.

[E.D.D. has bavin = a bundle of brushwood or fuel, but quots. mostly early. Common in Eng. dial. Origin uncertain. O.Fr. baffe, a bundle, and Gael. baban, a cluster, have been suggested.]
