BARRABAS, n. The common barberry, berberis vulgaris. [bɑr′ɑbəz]Fif. 1931 J. Wilkie Bygone Fife 122:
The common barberry . . . is popularly [in Kennoway] called Barrabas.

[Prob. a corruption of barberry. The tradition [in Kennoway] is that it was the Sacred Thorn brought to Fife by a saint or pilgrim (Fif.6).]
