ASTOUND, ppl.adj. Stunned. Now archaic in Mod.Eng. and with weakened meaning = amazed.Sc. 1764 W. H. in Scots Mag. XXVI. 197:
Astound he stood; for in his limbs There was nae power at a'.

[O.Sc. astune, pa.t. astunyt = were amazed, astonate, astonade, pa.p. = astounded. O.Fr. estoner, estuner, estouner; Mod.Fr. étonner; from Lat. ex and tonāre, to thunder. Cf. Lat. attonāre, to strike with a thunderbolt, to stun.]
