ANKERLY, adv. Unwillingly. Cf. Enkeerloch, adj., "having a difficult temper," Jam.2Kcb.1 1931:
A native [of Dalbeattie] is quite familiar with ankerly and has heard it frequently.

[Etym. uncertain. O.Sc. has enkerly, enkrely, but in the senses especially, extremely. Cf. Norw. ank, trouble, Sw. dial. ank, discontent, complaining. Cf. Gael. eangarra, cross-tempered, from eang, a corner, Eng. ang (MacBain).]
