AMERCIAMENT, n. Amercement; fine.Lnk. 1710 Minutes J.P.'s Lnk. (S.H.S. 1931) 89:
Fynes and amerciats al and every the constables . . . in the sume of [ ] Scots money of amerciament.

[O.Sc., Mid.Eng. amerciament, Med.Lat. amerciamentum, from amerciāre, Anglo-Fr. amercier, to amerce, a + merci from Lat. mercēdem = wages, in late Lat. = mercy; to be amerced was to be at the mercy of the judge as to the amount of the fine.]
