ALAMOTTI, ALAMOUTI, ALAMUTI, n. The stormy petrel.Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
Alamuti, stormy petrel.
Ork. 1774 G. Low Tour thro' Ork. and Schet. (1879) 43:
A bird called Alamonti . . . the Storm Finch or Little Petrel . . . it frequents . . . in the breeding season many other of the Orkney holms [besides Hunda].
[Note: the form alamonti is a misprint for alamouti.]Ork. 1806 P. Neill Tour through . . . Ork. and Sh. 197:
Alamotti, stormy petrel, Procellaria pelagica. This is also known by the whimsical name of Mother Carey's chicken. . . . In the Hebrides it is called the Assilag.

[Origin of ala- uncertain; cf. Sw. dial. alle = auk. The second part is Sh. "muti, (a) small being, (b) stormy petrel" (Jak.).]
