Tippet(t, Tepat, n. Also: tippat(t, -ate, tip(p)it, tipott, typ(p)et(t, -at, tepate, -et(t, teppet, toupat, tuppat. [ME and e.m.E. tipet (c1300), typet (Chaucer), tepet (c1400), typett (Prompt. Parv.), typpet (1530), tippit(t (1532-3), tippet (1550); f. Eng. tip n. the apex of a thing. See note below.] A tippet. Also proverb.The word was orig. ‘used as a synonym for the liripipe pendant from the apex of the hood and hanging down the back or … twisted turbanwise about the crown of the hood' and later ‘a narrow strip of material worn on the shoulders with the ends hanging down the front of the body’ (C.
