Tanning, vbl. n. Also: tanying, tawning. [e.m.E. tannyng (1481), tanning (1598); Tan v.] The action or occupation of steeping (hides, etc.) in tan or making them into leather. — 1621 Aberd. Council Lett. I 195.
Sic as uses the traid of tanying within the burghe 1623 Conv. Burghs III 142.
The barkeris, tanneris, and handleris with hyids … ar broght to extreame pouertie be the new forme of barking and tanning of hyides 1624 Linlithgow B. Rec. 12 Nov.
