[Late ME suppowall (1400), suppoayle (c1400), suppoaille (Hoccleve), sowpewaille (Lydgate), AF *suppouail, *suppoial, suppuail, var. of souspoial, f. sou(s)poier, -puier, vulgar L. *sub(tus)podiāre, f. sub(tus) and podium (all in OED).
