Sterling, Starling, Stirling, n. Also: sterlin(e, -eing, -yng, -yne, -ang, steireling, starlin(g)(e, -eing, -eyng, stairleing, starl.; stirlin(e, stirlling, styrlynge; stirviling, stir(r)veling, strivilin(g, striveling, (striling). [ME and e.m.E. sterling, -yng(e (both 1297), starling (a1330), OF esterlin (Wace in Larousse), med. L. sterlingus, prob. OE *steorling ‘coin with a star’ ? in allusion to the earliest ‘short-cross’ coins.]In some examples, confused with, and mistakenly derived from the name of the town of Stirling. (Cf. Sterline).

A. noun. The Norman silver penny minted in England and Scotland (and on the Continent) from the 11th or 12th century; in some instances in the 14th century, and thereafter, prob. usu. with specific reference to the English coin.Of the payment of Scotland and similar phrases prob. indicate a decrease in the value of the Scottish coinage previously (up to c1370) in parity with England. For further information see Coinage in Medieval Scotland (1100-1600) ed. D. M. Metcalf (British Archaeological Reports 45).The apparent agreement between the unit of weight (librarum and marcarum) in two of the Latin examples with sterlingorum seems to be coincidental; it is not inconceivable, however, that these examples are adjectival and belong in B 1. 1223 Reg. Episc. Glasg. I 108.
