[ME and e.m.E. schaftmonde (?a1400), shaftmount (a1483), shaftemente (1545), shaftman (1598), OE sceaftmund, f. sceaft (see S(c)haft n.1) and mund hand, handbreadth (‘probably sceaft was intended to denote the extended thumb’ (OED)).] The distance from the end of the extended thumb to the opposite side of the hand, used as a measure (= about 6 inches). — 14..
