Proprietar, -o(u)r, n. Also: -priat-; -preat-; -prayat-; -prit- and -are, -air, -er. [Only Sc. till 1639. OF proprietaire (1335 in Hatz.-Darm.), late L. proprietārius. Cf. American Eng. (Lord) proprietor (1639), 17th c. Eng. proprietor (a1667).] One who has the exclusive right or title to the use or disposal of a thing (chiefly heritable property); an owner; a proprietor.Also attrib. or appositive.(1) 1489 Acts II 222/2.
