[ME and e.m.E. pretory (Cursor M.), -i(e a prætorium, hall or palace, the prætorian guard, OF pretorie, L. prætorium general's tent, provincial governor's palace, prætorian guard.] Rendering L. prætorium, the tent or house of the commanding general in a Roman camp. — 1533 Bell. Livy I 211/11.
