(Maumet,) Mawmet, n. [ME. maumete (13th c.), maumet(te, mawmet(te, etc., maummet (15th c.), maunmet (14–15th c.), early mahimet (Layamon), a false god or idol, OF. mahumet idol, a use of Mahomet Ma(c)homet(e. The common Sc. form is Maument.] A pagan idol. — c1420 Wynt. v. 5606.
