Litil(l, Lytil(l, Littil(l, Lil(t)le, adj., n. and adv. Also: -ille, -ile, -yl(l, -yle, -el(l, -ele, lytt-, lyitil(l; lyt(t)le, littl(l; letill, -le, lett-, leitell; laytille, layttil(l. [ME. litell (Orm), litel, -il, lytyll, and littl- (Orm), littel (Cursor M.), also west. and south. lutel (12th c.), lutle, luytel, luitel (14th c.), and luttel (Layamon), OE. lýtel, ONorthumb. lyttil (and cf. also the synonymous ON. lítell).The prevalent form with shortened initial vowel, perh. follows on the syncope of the medial vowel in OE. inflected forms. The variants represented by the spellings lyitil and letill, leitell respectively were appar. less common.]

The compar. litler occurs only rarely, the compar. and superl. being supplied by Les adj. and Leste adj.
