Charter party, Chairter pairty, n. Also: chartar(e party, chartour partie. [F. charte partie, med. L. carta partita. In e.m.E. as chart parte (1540), chartipartie (1591), charter partie (1599).]
1. A deed (originally indentured) between owners and merchants relating to the hire of a vessel and the delivery of the cargo.In the earliest examples the original spelling was no doubt charter. 1438 (c 1580) Edinb. B. Rec. 5.
