Assume (aschume), v. [ME. assume (1436), L. assūmere.]
1. tr. To take to oneself; to put on.1490 Irland Mir. 89/28 (assumand the nature of angell); Ib./37 (he has assumyt oure nature).
2. To take up, levy or collect, as a due (from ecclesiastical property). Cf. Assumption 3. 1561 Reg. Dunferm. 449.
We command yow to assume alsmekill beir and aittis out of the reddiest … payment of the tua pairt of the abbacie of Dumfermling as the said kirk of Newbirne schyre was assumit [read affirmit] of befoir in awld 1581 Acts III. 236/2.
