Aganist, Aganest, prep. Also: aganiste, -yst; againest, -ist. [f. aganis Againis, after ME. and e.m.E. ageynst, agaynst, etc. The E. form against is also freq. in Sc. from c 1570.] = Again, Againis prep. in various senses.1513 Doug. vi. xv. 80 (aganyst him); xi. xii. 13 (aganyst thame). 1558-66 Knox II. 60 (aganist quhilk place … ). 1622-6 Bisset II. 254/26 (aganist the fyrst hyrare). 1664 Forbes Baron Ct. 252 (ewry on againest ane other).
