Acknawlege, v. Also: -leg, -ledge, accn-, akn-, akknawlege, acknaulege. [Late ME. acknowleche (Caxton), e.m.E. acknowledge (c 1550); first used with the Sc., later (from c 1580) also with the Eng. vowel.]
1. tr. To acknowledge, confess, admit.1562-3 Winȝet I. 68/6 (that God mot be treulie acknaulegeit). 1563-1570 Buch. Wr. 53 (acknawlegeing his authoritie). 1596 Dalr. I. 105/29 (quhome the tounes accnawleges to be frie). 1605 Elphinstone Mun. 34 (to acknaulege thair errour). 1632 Bamff Chart. 229 (acknawleginge that … ).
