SPANG, n.3 A buckle, clasp, metal plate (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928), 1914 Angus Gl., Sh. 1971). [spɑŋ]Sh. 1949 J. Gray Lowrie 38:
Pittin' a lap apo da fore hassan, an' a spang apo da eft een o' da peerie boat.

[O.Sc. spang, a spangle, 1423. Obs. in Eng. Of L.Ger. orig., spange, id. The Du. form spang, buckle, is prob. the immediate orig. of the word in Sh., rather than Norw. spong, O.N. spǫng, which has somewhat different meanings.]
