SHOLMARK, n. An abnormal mark on an animal at birth, a birth-mark (Sh. 1914 Angus Gl., Sh. 1970), specif. in ppl.adj. sholmarkit, -ed, sjolmarket, of a calf: having a part of the ear missing, without the ear tips (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928)). [′ʃɔlmɑrk]Sh. 1897 Shetland News (17 June):

[The first element is somewhat uncertain but poss. ad. Norw. hjelm, O.N. hjálmr, a helmet, as in Sholmit, as if the animal were wearing a helmet which concealed its ears.]
