MUFFLE, n. Sc. usage of Eng. muffle, a boxing-glove: a fingerless glove or mitt (Sc. 1808 Jam.; Ork. 1929 Marwick, s.v. mellit).Rs. 1724 W. MacGill Old Ross-shire (1909) 147:
To a pair muffles 15d. sterling.
Cai. 1903 E.D.D.:
A muffle has only two divisions; one for the thumb, and the other for the four fingers.
