†GARWHOUNGLE, n. “The noise made by the bittern, when it rises from the bog” (Ayr. 1825 Jam.). Hence fig. the clash of tongues (Ib.).[gar- = Cur-, car-, pref. + echoic whoungle. The genuineness of the word is suspect.]
