It was a very unlucky thing to tread upon the tongs, which were known under the name of clivin.

[O.N. klofi, cleft implement (cogn. Eng. cleave), prob. through the influence of Clivvie. The pl. form is due, according to Jak., to the influence of Eng. tongs.]
