BEERAN, BIORAN, n. A small trout. [′birən]Sth., Inv. 1933 R.B.:
Bioran alone is used by boys in Badenoch, and here round about Dornoch, for small trout fry, etc., about the size and not unlike the shape of a stickleback.
Inv. 1898 H.E.F. in E.D.D.:
Beeran. In common use.

[Gael. bioran, a dim. of bior, a stake or spit or little stick, Lat. veru (R.B.). See also Beelan.]
