BAYIN, n. A species of wrasse. This form is still heard (Wgt. 1961). See also Bavin. [′bɑɪn]Gall. c.1700 Symson Large Descr. of Gall. (1823) 149:
A Bayin, a thick little fish, about a foot long, red coloured, with some white spots in the belly.

[Perhaps a peculiar spelling for Bavin, n.1 The wrasse is known on the Wigtownsh. coast to-day as the bowin [bʌuɪn] (Gall.1). See Bowin, n.1]
