VINE, n. Sc. usage: one of the haulms or stalks of a potato plant. Cf. Eng. vine, of any trailing greenery.Fif. 1882 J. Simson Inverkeithing 17:
The herds . . . generally stole their potatoes by digging them with their hands while allowing the vines to stand.
