TALER, n. Also talor (Fif. 1825 Jam.), tolor (Ib.). State, condition; in better taler, in better condition (n.Sc. 1808 Jam.), in gude taler, in a proper condition for a given purpose, e.g., of water when heated to a sufficient degree for washing (Fif. 1825 Jam.). [′tɑlər, ′tɔlər]

[Orig. uncertain. Phs. Fr. †tailleure, a cutting, shaping, trait or line (in palmistry), but there are phonological difficulties.]
