SWABIE, n. Also swaabi(e), swab(b)i; swabek (Jak.). The full form swartba(c)k is found occas. in formal writing. [′swɑbi] The great black-backed gull, Larus marinus (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XII. 214, swaabie, 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928), swabi, Sh. 1971). Also in comb. swaabi-maa, id. (Sh. 1971).Ork. 1805 G. Barry Hist. Ork. 304:
Our black-backed mew, or as it is sometimes called, swartback.
