STUB, v. Sc. usage: to crop, eat short, nibble (vegetation) down to the roots. Cf. Eng. dial. stub, to cut down (a tree, etc.) to a short stump.Edb. 1814 J. Monro Farewell Song 63:
I grudge to see him croppin ilka shrub An' me here starvin, butten bush to stub.
