†STRUMMEL, n. Also strummle. The mixture of unsmoked tobacco and ash left in the bottom of a pipe, Dottle (Peb., Rxb. 1825 Jam.). Hence strummle ends, fragments of tobacco.Lnk. 1916 Border Mag. (Oct.) 231:
The convenient receptacle that held strummle ends while the village smoker prepared his pipe.
