URE. Zool. After David Ure (c.1750–98), of Glasgow, minister of Uphall, historian of Rutherglen, etc., geologist. Derivs. urii, specif. name of various molluscs and an echinoderm, Turritella, or turret-shell, Bellerophon, a gasteropod of carboniferous times, Unio or fresh-water mussel, and Cidaris, a sea-urchin (1828 J. Fleming Hist. Brit. Anim. 305, 338, 417, 478); Ureocrinus, a genus of Lower Carboniferous sea-lily (1945 Wright and Strimple in Geol. Mag. LXXXII. 221); Urodus, a genus of Lower Carboniferous fishes (1901 Wellburn in Geol. Mag. VIII. 216).
