MENZIES. After Archibald Menzies (1754–1842), of Weem, Perthshire, naval surgeon, naturalist and botanist in W. America.

1. Deriv. Menziesia, a genus of ericaceous shrubs of North America (1789 J. E. Smith Plantarum Icones 56).

2. Deriv. menziesii, a specific name of many plants and trees of that area and the Central Pacific islands. Pseudotsuga menziesii is the Douglas fir, Unio menziesii a New Zealand fresh-water mussel.
