ISOTOPE. Chem. The word was proposed by Professor F. J. Soddy in 1913 on the suggestion of Dr Margaret G. Todd (1859–1918), of Glasgow, to express the concept of elements of different atomic weights with the same chemical properties propounded by Sir A. Fleck. See Trans. Royal Philosoph. Soc. Gsw. (13 Jan. 1954).

[The word was appar. created independently of the earlier creation (1904) of the adj. form isotopic for substances with similar molecular structures.]
