GREGORY. In allusion to: 1. James Gregory (1638–75), of Drumoak in Aberdeenshire, Professor of Mathematics in the University of Edinburgh, who in 1661 devised the first reflecting, the Gregorian, telescope. Also in phr. Gregory's series in Geometry, the series tan -1x = x – ⅓x3 + ⅕x5x7 etc.

2. James Gregory (1753–1821), born in Aberdeen, Professor of Medicine in the University of Edinburgh, in Gregory's powder, a mixture of rhubarb, ginger and magnesia, used as a mild purgative, esp. for children, prescribed by Dr Gregory.
