ELGIN MARBLES. A famous group of sculptures of the 5th c. B.C. from the Acropolis at Athens, esp. from the pediment of the Parthenon, acquired in 1801 by Thomas Bruce (1766–1841), Earl of Elgin, then British ambassador at Constantinople, and sold in 1816 to the British Museum.
