HERE, n. In phrs. to come or gang to here and were, to quarrel, contend, dispute (Fif., Rxb. 1825 Jam., obsol.). [her] [Orig. uncertain. Jam. suggests O.Sc. here, an army, but this is found only in poet. and not after the early 16th c. The word might represent hair, cf. Du. in het haar vliegen, Ger. in die Haare kommen, to come to a quarrel. The second element appears to be Weir, n.1]
