BREESE, n. See quot.:Ork. 1973 Orcadian (20 Dec.):
Breese: the name given to some kind of contest with a ball which used to take place at Deerness school at the end of December. The children divided into two groups according to where they lived — east and west. The result of this contest decided which half of the parish would have the ball to play with on the New Year's Day holiday.

[Poss. a variant (unusual for Ork.) of Broose, n., extended to other kinds of contest.]
