SMERGH, n. Also sme(e)r-, smear-; smerk-; smerv-; smeeth-; smyach (Cai. 1904 E.D.D.), smeuch. [†smerx; ne.Sc.′smi:r-]
†1. Bone-marrow (Sc. 1755 S. Johnson Dict. s.v. marrow; n.Sc. 1808 Jam.), pith. Comb. smerkerien, smair-caryin (S.D.D.), the spinal marrow (Fif. 1825 Jam.). For the form cf. Merkerin. Deriv. smervie, -y, misprinted smewy (ne.Sc. 1808 Jam.), and smertry (S.D.D.), of food: full of pith or substance, having savour and succulence. Also fig.Abd. 1768 A. Ross Helenore (S.T.S.) 115, 125:
