SKARE, n. Also skyare; skware (Marw., Cai.). The amount of corn or hay mown by the sweep of a scythe, a swathe (Ork. 1929 Marw.; Ork., Cai. 1970). [sk(j)e:r; skwe:r]Ork. 1920 J. Firth Reminisc. 111:
Women raked the “skares” together into heaps.

[The meaning is that of Norw. skår, O.N. skári, a swathe, but the vowel is irreg., unless early Sc. influence can be assumed. Skware seems to be due to formal confusion with square. See Skorie.]
