SHODDIE, n. A natural stone used, roughly dressed, for building (Inv., Mry., Fif., Ayr. 1970). The form shoddoo, found in Ork. meaning a large chunk or lump of anything, may be a variant of this word.

[The word is used in quarrying and ore-mining districts of England and n. Ireland to mean loose or fragmented stones or lumps of ore. Of uncertain orig. Phs. a n. form from O.E. scādan, Eng. shed, to divide. Cf. Eng. shoad, id.]
