SALLE, n. Also saal. A long open workroom in a factory, gen. used for the finishing process, or dispatch of goods, esp. in a paper-works (Ags. 1945).Kcb. 1900 Crockett Stickit Minister's Wooing 58:
The village girls, finding that they could make themselves early independent, took their places in the long “finishing saal”.
