RESTRICT, v. Also Sc. form restrick (Sc. 1914 N.E.D.; Abd. 1968). To confine, to limit. Rare in Eng. till the 19th c. and orig. a Sc. usage (Sc. 1782 J. Sinclair Ob. Sc. Dial. 92, 1799 H. Mitchell Scotticisms 69).Sc. 1731 J. Arbuthnot Aliments (1735) 218:
In the Enumeration of Constitutions . . . there is not one that can be limited and restricted by sucb a Distinction.
Sc. 1776 A. Smith Wealth of Nations IIII. ii.:
The common law of England . . . is said to abhor perpetuities, and they are accordingly more restricted by such a distinction.

[O.Sc. restrict, restrik, id., 1535. Johnson in 1755 describes it as “a word scarce English”. Restriction has been in Eng. since the 15th c., O.Sc. restriccioun, 1490.]
