RESIDUARY, adj., n. Also Sc. form reseeduary. Sc. usages: I. adj. Belonging or appertaining to the Established Church of Scotland after the Disruption of 1843, gen. with derogatory force. Obs. or hist.Sc. 1843 Witness (19 May) 2:
Residuary Assembly. After the Evangelical Party had left the House . . .
Sc. 1845 Hansard (16 April) 882:
Even in Scotland . . . there were the Secession Church, the Relief Church, and the Free Church; that which the State upheld being called by the complimentary name of the Residuary Church.
Per. 1883 R. Cleland Inchbracken iii.:
The “Residuary” Presbytery, as you are pleased to denominate the Church of your fathers.
Sc. 1927 J. R. Fleming Hist. Church 1843–1874 55:
The remanent Church of Scotland. Note. We avoid the adjective “residuary”, contemptuously used at the time.
