QUARTEN, n. Also quartan. Sc. variants of Eng. quartern, a quarter of anything, in quot. a quarter-pint. Comb. quarten-loaf, a quartern-loaf, a four-pound loaf, one made from a quarter-pound of flour (s.Sc. 1967).Fif. 1759 E. Henderson Dunfermline (1879) 473:
