PROGNOSTIC, n. An almanac, “evidently from the prognostications it was wont to contain concerning the weather” (Abd. 1825 Jam.). Also in full form prognostication (Sc. 1787 J. Beattie Scoticisms 73), and reduced form prognosty, id. (Abd. 1966). Obs. in Eng. in 17th c.Bch. 1930:
Aw wis leukan the prognosty for ony signs o' coorse widder.
