NOOP, n. Also knoop, nup(e). Gen. in pl.: the cloudberry, Rubus chamaemorus (Bwk. 1853 G. Johnston Botany E. Borders 71, Rxb. 1889 Hist. Bwk. Nat. Club 475; Dmf. 1894 Trans. Dmf. & Gall. Antiq. Soc. 152, nups; Cai. 1903 E.D.D., nupe; n.Sc. 1906 J. A. Harvie-Brown Fauna Tay xxxii., knoop; Rxb. 1923 Watson W.-B.; Cai., Sth. 1952 Scotsman (6 Sept.); s.Sc. 1964). Found also in n.Eng. dial. Comb. nup-berry, id. (Rxb. 1866 Trans. Hawick Arch. Soc. 22, 1923 Watson W.-B.). See also Nub, Combs. [nup]

[Etym. uncertain, no doubt connected with ‡Eng. knop, a knob, and Nupe, but the vowel is irreg. (see note to Noup, which may have influenced the form). The Norw. dial. by-form njupa, a dog-hip, is hardly likely to be the same word.]
