MATHER, int. Also maether (Abd. 1903 E.D.D.), maader (Abd. 1825 Jam.). A call to a horse to turn to the left or near side. [′meðər, †′mɑ:d-]Ags. 1810 Farmer's Mag. (Dec.) 513:
To come to the left, the word "Mather" pronounced more gently, is used. "Mather" is evidently a contraction of "Come hither".

[Shortened or slurred form, with wrong division, of phr. come hither! See Come Ather.]
