MAST-HEID, n.comb. The mast-head, used fig. in phr. to the mast-heid, to the fullest possible extent. Gen.Sc.Edb. 1821 W. Liddle Poems 97:
An Idiot cram'd to the mast-head Wi' that insatiate glutton weed.
Abd. 1871 W. Alexander Johnny Gibb xi.:
He'll haud on the manure to the mast-heid, fatever it may cost.
Sc. 1887 Stevenson Misadventure J. Nicholson i.:
He was . . . enjoying to the mast-head the modest pleasures of admiration.
Abd. 1903 E.D.D.:
Hold on to the mast-head [endure to the end]. He is mad to the mast-head. They got whisky to the mast-head. The laddie was punished to the mast-head.
