MAGGIE, n.1 Curtailed dim. form of magpie (Fif. c.1930; Abd., Lth., wm.Sc., Wgt., Rxb. 1962). Also in n.Eng. dial. Applied to the common guillemot, Uria aalge (Ags. 1885 C. Swainson Brit. Birds 218), from its black and white plumage like that of a magpie.
